First Boston Marathon held

On April 19, 1897, John J. McDermott of New York won the first Boston Marathon with a time of 2:55:10.

The first Boston Marathon is run, the shot heard around the world is coined in the Ralph Waldo Emerson poem, Concord Hymn, Grace Kelly becomes Princess Grace of Monaco, and Pope Benedict is elected in This Day in History video. The date is April 19th. Actress Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier and became the sponsor of the Cannes Film Festival.

19th Century

First drunk driving arrest

On September 10, 1897, a 25-year-old London taxi driver named George Smith becomes the first person ever arrested for drunk driving after slamming his cab into a building. Smith later pleaded guilty and was fined 25 shillings.
