Close behind were Confederate General John Bell Hood and his Army of Tennessee looking to finish them off. But the Union troops dug strong defenses and ultimately held on. Hood's questionable decisions cost the lives of six Confederate generals and thousands of Southern troops, marking this brutal battle as one of the South's worst defeats of the war.

In his final log entry, the captain attributes the initial explosion to a torpedo. A German U-boat was in the area and her captain took credit for the sinking; but the U-156 itself sank with the conclusive evidence--her captain's log.
